One of the issues that develops when using a reverse osmosis filter is a higher level of water use. Many RO systems can use up to 6-9 gallons of water for every 1 gallon of fresh water they produce. The Hydro Logic 31040 Stealth Reverse Osmosis Filter can produce up to 200 gallons of purified water per day while wasting about 25% less in wastewater than comparable RO systems.

This system does reduce the number of contaminants that can be eliminated from the water supply to provide such a feature, but not by much. Many systems promote a 99%+ reduction of contaminants, while this system can remove up to 98% of chlorine and contaminants.

Features of the Hydro Logic 31040

  • It offers owners an automatic shut-off cartridge as part of the standard setup, allowing for an easy way to reduce water use.
  • A pressure gauge is included with the system, allowing owners to monitor filter pressure in real-time to know if a replacement may be necessary.
  • It can mount virtually anywhere thanks to the included wall bracket. This includes underneath many sinks in kitchens, bathrooms, or other fixture locations.
  • This system is designed more for personal use. Although its peak production is 200 gallons per day, most homes in the 40-60 PSI range are going to see a production rate of about 8 gallons per hour.

There is a noticeable immediate improvement to water quality levels when using this reverse osmosis system. It’s designed more for drinking water and cooking than anything else, but it does well in that role. Water is available with only a slight delay and you can have enough water for virtually any cooking need in 10 minutes or less.

Our Thoughts About the Hydro Logic 31040

The membrane maintenance for this reverse osmosis system was the real highlight for us. You can clean it out in a few minutes and you only need to do so about once per quarter unless using it heavily. Most homeowners should see about 2 years of use before needing to replace the membrane in the unit.

Having a tank work with the reservoir bladder with this system gives you the best option. If you use this product as a tankless system, which is possible, the amount of water that can be produced daily will be greatly diminished.

Homeowners can hook up this system to virtually any fixture or faucet to get better water results. It’s often used for the kitchen, but it is strong enough to work with an ice maker. It would also work well for those with an aquarium setup, a photography dark room, or those who sleep with CPAP therapy and don’t want to keep purchasing distilled water for their equipment.

Our Grade: 8.5/10

The Hydro Logic 31040 Stealth Reverse Osmosis Filter does an excellent job at producing better water, but there can be a bit of a plastic smell to the water when you first access it during the day. This smell tends to get worse when installed in a location that is consistently warm, such as a kitchen sink next to an oven or stove. For the most part, however, this unit works as advertised and is consistent with particulate removal, which is why it earns our recommendation.
